The Pony Express mail service delivered mail, newspapers and small packages by horseback from St Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California for 18 months from April 1860 to October 1861.  A series of relay stations were set up on a route that crossed the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada's and riders rode an average of 100 miles a day, switching horses at various relay stations about every 10 miles.  The route was divided into 5 stations that were set up by the Leavenworth and Pike’s Peak Express Company, later known as the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Co. and tied California to the rest of the United States with hundreds of miles of territory in between.  The company had between four to five hundred horses on the lines and it took an average of seventy-five horses to run the distance between St. Joseph, MO and Sacramento, CA. in 10 days.  The telegraph eventually caused the demise of the Pony Express when news started arriving two days before the riders and although the volume of mail continued federal government subsidies were stopped upon the completion of the transcontinental telegraph.
