This Sheffield Damascas blade Bowie knife with staghorn handle is in very good condition and is made by one of Sheffield's finest cutler and the maker of the great American Bowie knives. It has I*XL stamped on the blade by the hilt designating the maker. The blade measures 8" long and length is 12" overall. Blade at the widest point is 1 1/4" wide. It comes with a sheet that is well made but shows wear from age.
George Wostenholms was one of the most influential and important manufactures of cutlery in the world. Began in 1785 in Sheffield England, the I*XL trademark wasn't registered to Wostenholm’s until 1831 although it was used for years by by the Wostenholms before the transfer from W.A. Smith who had it from 1787 according to the mark books of The Company of Cutlers.
I*XL knives were being sold in America as early as 1830 through a partnership but subsequently he established offices from New York to San Francisco so he could service the growing demand of this craftsmen made I*XL knives while. The most popular of the knives that were sold was the famous bowie knife. During the mid 1800's the company expanded and employed more than 800 skilled laborers to produce their bowie knives, pocketknives and other cutlery. A variety of blade and tang stamps were used on the knives.
