The Texas Rangers are the oldest law enforcement entity in the United Sates. They officially came into being on August 10, 1985 by a resolution to protect the border. The rangers participated in most of the important events in Texas history including famous old west criminal cases. Some of these were the infamous gunfighter John Wesley Hardin, and bank robbers Sam Bass and Bonnie and Clyde. The most famous fictional Texas Ranger is “The Lone Ranger” whose character is based upon a Texas Ranger and the only surviving member of a group of six Texas Rangers who were killed in a massacre.
Originally the rangers had no uniform and dressed according to the needs of the mission which was on horseback and whatever was long wearing and durable that they could afford as the pay was very low. Today the rangers still have no regulation uniform although they do have the guideline of their clothing has to be western in styling. They usually wear boots, gun belts and Stetsons. Texas Rangers are now a division of the Texas Department of Public Safety and serve as the State Bureau of Investigation. You can learn more about the Texas Rangers by visiting the official Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum.
