Today's Ranger Belts have been modified from the historical ranger belt style by being made to wear with pants instead of the original function of holding a gun holster. This style became popular with the advent of waistlines being lowered and the different stylings of jeans, pants and trousers.
Ranger belts were created when the new Colt six-shooters came into use. Originally belts were not worn to hold pants up as pants were high-waisted and usually held up with either suspenders or by tightening a “cinch” on the back of the pants. Until this time most men stuffed their weapons in their waist band, wore a pouch or cloth belt to secure their knives, pistols or other items. Due to the weight of the six-shooter stuffing it in your pants wasn’t very comfortable and the high waist made it hard to get it out of the waistband so many carried them in a pommel holster or holster mounted somewhere within easy reach on the saddle.
The ranger belt was designed wide with shorter, narrow billet straps sewn onto the wider strap which mimicked the design of a cinch strap on a western saddle. This design also allowed the billet strap to be replaced when it became worn out.
This gun belt became part of the “unofficial uniform” of the Texas Rangers as it was easy to use by adding a holster and was long lasting due to the ability to replace the billet straps. Today's Ranger Belts are a form of the original belts but are made only to worn as a belt with jeans, pants or trousers.
